Description
Ericoid mycorrhizae (ERM) form between a range of fungal symbionts and the hair roots of ericaceous plants. This data set includes the fungal symbionts that were identified from root hairs of Erica mammosa and Erica versicolor. The diversity of the symbionts were examined using both cloning and sequencing and automated ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis (ARISA). The data represent the collection details for the Ericas, as well as sequence reference and catalogue numbers for the isolates which are housed in the Microbiology Department of Stellenbosch University.
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 193 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Sampling Methods
ARISA (Automated ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis) analysis was done on a number of roots from a variety of fynbos sites, and data comparisons were done to compare the endophytic community both within different regions of root systems, between individual plants, and between different nature reserves, to determine if any significant patterns of association exist.

Method step description:
- The data includes endophytes isolated from Erica mammosa roots which were cultured, and then DNA was extracted and sequenced.
