[This is the official yearly release of the South African National Plant Checklist for 2025. The name records included in this release were extracted from the taxonomic backbone of the Botanical Database of Southern Africa (BODATSA) by the SA National Plant Checklist Coordinator., BODATSA is a BRAHMS v.8 database that houses the plant taxonomic backbone, e-Flora of South Africa content, and specimen level information from the three herbaria of the South African National Biodiversity Institute [SANBI; namely the National Herbarium (PRE), Compton Herbarium (NBG), and the KwaZulu-Natal Herbarium (NH)], as well as data on the living collections of the SANBI National Botanical Gardens., The name of a plant is the key to all the information that is available for that plant. With ongoing taxonomic research resulting in new species descriptions and refining of classification systems, it is essential to keep abreast of systematic changes that influence the names of plants. Having a well-maintained, correct and up-to-date plant species inventory (checklist) is essential to all foundational and applied biodiversity research., SANBI is mandated in the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (2004) to coordinate and promote the taxonomy of South Africa’s biodiversity, as well as to collect, generate, process, coordinate and disseminate information about biodiversity. SANBI is thus obligated to provide and manage a checklist of South African plants and to make this National Plant Checklist available to all end-users., Accurate species checklists underpin all biodiversity research in the country. The South Africa National Plant Checklist forms the backbone for projects relating to the country’s flora, e.g. the e-Flora of South Africa and the SANBI Biodiversity Advisor website (https://biodiversityadvisor.sanbi.org/), where the Checklist is subsequently disseminated along with information about each plant species; Status Reports for Biological Invasions (https://www.sanbi.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Biological-invasions-Report-in-South-Africa-in-2022.pdf)—where the Checklist serves as a list of potential invasive taxa yet to be investigated for inclusion in such reports; the Red List of South African Plants (https://redlist.sanbi.org/); and the National Biodiversity Assessment (https://www.sanbi.org/biodiversity/building-knowledge/biodiversity-monitoring-assessment/national-biodiversity-assessment/).]

List of Alien Species in South Africa 2025 - Version 1.0

[The species list of alien taxa in South Africa was developed as part of triennial national status reports on biological invasions. It therefore includes: taxa that are, have been, or were proposed to be regulated; alien taxa that are or have been present in South Africa (including those only ever recorded in quarantine facilities); taxa that are native to a part of South Africa that have formed native-alien populations in another part of the country; and taxa which have been recorded at some point as alien or for which the risk of invasion has been evaluated. The list also includes information on the invasion status of the taxa, their pathways, distributions, impacts, and management, with metadata provided for all 38 variables, including confidence and data sources for 23 of them. Based on information up to the end of December 2022, the checklist includes over 6000 taxa, of which over 3500 are alien taxa confirmed as present outside of captivity or cultivation. However, several key data sources still need to be verified and integrated into the list (particularly taxa in captivity or cultivation). Thus, this list should not yet be regarded as a complete baseline of the knowledge of alien taxa present in South Africa. The checklist is presented in a manner that is tidy and FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) and will be maintained, expanded, and updated, with the aim for the list to become comprehensive and dynamic. By so doing, the checklist will allow the number and status of alien taxa to be tracked over time, informing management planning and regulatory decisions.]

South African National Species Checklist (Catalogue of Life in South Africa, COLSA) - Version 1.2

[The South African National Species Checklist (Catalogue of Life in South Africa, COLSA) is the authoritative checklist of South Africa’s species and biodiversity. In the current version, 99254 accepted names with 37144 synonyms, and South African vernaculars are included in the data package. The current 2025 version is composed of three key datasets, including the South African National Plant Checklist, the South African National Animal Checklist, and the List of Alien Species in South Africa (2025). This consolidated and authoritative list of species is presented in a manner that is tidy and FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) and will be maintained and expanded as additional species lists become available. Nationally, many institutions throughout South Africa have contributed species lists through SANBI’s managed network of Partners. Here, programmes like the Foundational Biodiversity Information Programme and the SANBI-GBIF Node, has supported the generation and mobilisation of biodiversity data, for its use in scientific research, policy and decision-making. Some museums and research institutions including through Natural Science Collections Facility have also contributed data. The species list of alien taxa in South Africa was developed as part of triennial national status reports on biological invasions and has been coordinated by the Invasives Species Programme at SANBI. This checklist was compiled as an outcome of the Research and Innovation Working Group of the G20, under the South African presidency. This checklist formed part of the deliverables under Priority 2 "Biodiversity Information for Sustainable Development" for GBIF to build a Catalogue of Life (a list of all the world’s species) within the G20 framework.]

Monitoring Forest Vegetation and Carbon Change in the Upper Guinea Forest (UGF) - Soyah – Sabouya Forest, and the Ziama massif - Version 1.1

[This database is a combination of sets of Plant data generated in the Upper Guinea Forest specifically in the Soyah – Sabouya Forest, and the Ziama massif all in Guinea.
The timeline for this database was planned for September 2022 to October 2024. This project was funded by USAID through Tetra Tech/West Africa Biodiversity and Low Emission Development and implemented by Reptile and Amphibian Program Sierra Leone (RAP-SL), under a project titled: “Building Capacity to Monitor Forest Vegetation and Carbon Change in the Upper Guinea Forest through Permanent Sample Plots”. This project is controlled and managed under project number: WABiLED-G-003-RAP-SL.
At the Soyah and Sabouya forest which are at separate locations, two one-hectare permanent plots were sampled at the Montane dry forest of Soyah (1-ha) and the grassland savanna forest of Sabouya (1-ha). At the Ziama massif, two one-hectare permanent plots were sampled at the lowland rainforest of Seredou (1-ha) and Massadou (1-ha). Forty temporal plots were sampled at the community fallows in five communities (twenty plots) around Soyah-Sabouya communities and five communities (twenty plots) around Ziama massif. All plots, followed Forest Plots methodology (www.forestplots.net). The one-hectare plot sizes were square of 100 x 100 m and Coordinates (latitude, longitude and altitude) of all plots were recorded at the four corners of each plot. Plots were selected based on physical and human factors like climate, altitude, and slopes. All permanent plots were located in well managed protected areas, and temporal plots in disturb and fallow land. Plot data was replicated independently using quadrants. Diameter of all trees in each permanent plot (DBH ≥ 10 cm (100 mm) were recorded with the help of a diameter tape and tagged with a continuous serial number. Tree height of 60 trees, ten trees per diameter class were measured DBH 10 – 20 cm, 21 – 30 cm, 31 – 40 cm, 41 – 50 cm, 51 – 60 cm and >60 cm with the help of a Forestry Pro II Rangefinder. Temporal plot data were collected in smaller plots of 20 x 50 m. Plots were selected base on the degree of forest used. Young growth forest was classified as fallow land for 5 – 7 years and old growth forest as fallows for 10 – 15 years. In temporal plots, all trees with diameter (DBH ≥ 10 cm) (100 mm) were measured with the aid of a diameter tape and height measured using Forestry Pro II Rangefinder. Trees in temporal plots were not tagged. Temporal plots were georeferenced at a single start point (latitude, longitude and altitude). Specimens of doubtful species in the survey were collected, press, dried and identified at the Institute of Agronomy Research (IRAG) Herbarium in Seredou by using matching specimens in the herbarium, floras and monographs (Hawthorne and Jongkind, 2006, Hawthorne and Gyakari, 2006, Hutchinson, J., Dalziel et al., 1954-1972). Specimens for well-known species were not collected. Photographs of some species were captured. In the field and herbarium, specimens were identified by a Botanist (Moses N. Sainge) and Botanist from IRAG (Dore Djaka, Kolou Koivogui, Madou Keita). All collected specimens were deposited at the IRAG herbarium in Seredou. Taxonomy identification followed Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (APG) IV (2016) and the African Plant database (version 4.0.0, http://africanplantdatabase.ch.>). The current database is based on plot surveys, morphospecies identification, physical specimens and observations in permanent and temporal sample plots.
In all, a total of 3057 occurrence records are presented in this database, accounting to two classes, 18 orders, 47 families, 157 genera and 241 species. Data was collected at 14 sites. Four sites of Permanent Sample Plots and ten sites of Temporal sample plots in mid-elevation rainforest, mid-elevation montane dry forest, grassland savanna, young growth fallows of 5 – 7 years and old growth fallows of 10 – 15 years.
This database will be hosted by GBIF South Africa, published by Reptile and Amphibian Program Sierra Leone (RAP-SL), and will be made available to Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) portal for visibility.]

Monitoring Forest Vegetation and Carbon Change in the Upper Guinea Forest (UGF) - Gola Rainforest National Park, Outamba Kilimi National Park - Version 1.1

[This database is a combination of sets of Plant data generated in the Upper Guinea Forest specifically in the Gola Rainforest National Park, Outamba Kilimi National Park and in fallows (buffer zones) of these protected areas. All sample sites of this database are in Sierra Leone.
At the Gola Rainforest National Park, two one-hectare permanent plots were sampled at the lowland forest and at Outamba Kilimi National Park, two one-hectare permanent plots were also sampled at a dry savanna and gallery forest. All plots, followed Forest Plots methodology (www.forestplots.net). Plot sizes were square of 100 x 100 m and Coordinates (Latitude, Longitude and elevation) of all plots were recorded at the four corners of each plot. Plots were selected based on physical and human factors like climate, altitude, slopes, and degree of forest used. All plots were in well managed protected areas. Plot data was replicated independently using quadrants. Diameter of all trees in each plot (DBH ≥ 10 cm (100 mm) were recorded with the help of a diameter tape. Tree height of 60 trees, ten trees per diameter class were measured DBH 10 – 20 cm, 21 – 30 cm, 31 – 40 cm, 41 – 50 cm, 51 – 60 cm and >60 cm with the help of a Forestry Pro II Rangefinder. Specimens of doubtful species were collected, press, dried and identified at the National Herbarium of Sierra Leone using matching specimens in the herbarium, floras and monographs (Hawthorne and Jongkind, 2006, Hawthorne and Gyakari, 2006, Hutchinson, J., Dalziel et al., 1954-1972). Specimens for well-known species were not collected. In the field, specimens were identified by a Botanist (Moses N. Sainge) and in the herbarium by Moses and herbarium staff of the National Herbarium at the Njala University campus. Taxonomy identification followed Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (APG) IV (2016) and the African Plant database (version 4.0.0, http://africanplantdatabase.ch.>). The current database is based on plot surveys, morphospecies identification, physical specimens and observations.
In all, a total of 3059 occurrence records are presented in this database, accounting to two classes, 17 orders, 47 families, 148 genera and 235 species. Data was collected at 13 sites: in three protected areas and ten non-protected areas in fallows. One grassland savanna (Outamba Kilimi), one lowland (Gola rainforest) forest, four young fallows of 5 – 7 years old and five old fallows of 10 – 15 years were sampled.
This database will be hosted by GBIF South Africa, published by Reptile and Amphibian Program Sierra Leone (RAP-SL), and will be made available to Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) portal for visibility.]

[Ant invertebrate records were sampled using pitfall traps, at the Cape Peninsular National Park, in the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve Section in 1999. The aim of this study, was to determine if ants were useful as indicators of recovery success in South African fynbos cleared of invasive alien plants by different clearing methods. Ant abundance, species richness, diversity, evenness, and composition were compared between treatment and control areas, at three sites in the Reserve. The alien clearing methods were comprised of several treatments (including multiple treatments in one site), including K1a: burnt, bulldozed and aerial sprayed; K1b:burnt, bulldozed and aerial sprayed; K2: burnt and aerial sprayed; K3: Control at the Klaasjagersberg site; M4: Control at the Meadows site, M5: Burnt and foliar sprayed; P6a: Burnt and boomsprayed, P6b: Burnt and boomsprayed, P7: Burnt and foliar sprayed, P8: Control site at the Platboom site. The overall study utilised both a vegetation survey and an ant survey, as indicators of recovery success in fynbos vegetation. Data was collected as part of a Postgraduate Masters Degree Project, with specimens contributing to the Iziko Natural History Collections. The Project was registered with the University of Cape Town, with the Institute for Plant Conservation and conducted in collaboration with Iziko Museums.]

[The e-Flora of South Africa project was initiated in 2013 by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) in support of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC, 2011-2020), Target 1 (to create a global Flora, consisting of ca. 350 000 species). South Africa's flora consists of ca. 21 000 species of which more than half are endemic. South Africa will contribute a national Flora towards Target 1 of the GSPC. South Africa's contribution is ca. 6% of the World Flora of which ca. 3% are endemics and therefore unique.

South Africa’s electronic Flora is comprised of previously published descriptions. Permission to re-use extracts from published literature was obtained from the relevant copyright holders.]

[The North West Province, South Africa, is centrally situated in southern Africa and is characterised by savannah with a mesic, temperate climate in the east and a hot, arid climate in the west. While the eastern region is fairly well-documented for herpetofauna, the arid central and western regions are poorly surveyed. Given that the Province has been targeted by the national government for development of infrastructure, the overall deficiency of biodiversity data could result in impact assessments that are not well-informed. We, therefore, carried out herpetofaunal surveys over two years (2019–2020) in the North West Province to improve knowledge on the distributions of reptiles and amphibians. Our surveys added a total of 578 new records to an earlier baseline of 1340 records. In addition, over 300 records were added to a citizen-science platform in connection with our surveys. As compared to the previous 100 years, our surveys increased the herpetofaunal dataset by 68% in just two years, increased geographic coverage by 20% and brought the total number of species with accurate records for the Province to 102 reptiles and 23 amphibians. We also recorded range extensions for five reptile species and confirmed the presence of Dendroaspis polylepis (Black Mamba) in the west where it had been last recorded in 1996. Our surveys resulted in a significant increase in biodiversity data for the Province and provided a better foundation for spatial planning that accounts for biodiversity and the maintenance of ecological function.]

[Around the 1930’s Stevenson and Day along with the University of Cape Town (UCT) started up the UCT ecological survey project which aimed to create a reference collection of the biodiversity along the southern African coastline and various other localities around the world (e.g. Beaufort shelf transect Alaska, Madagascar, etc.) (Griffiths et al. 2010). Initially the survey/project was conducted along the shoreline of southern Africa (estimated collection areas: 36). The survey/project was later expanded to surveying the estuaries of southern Africa (estimated collection areas: 17). The survey/project was completed by conducting deeper water trawls and dredges of the west, south and east coast of southern Africa. It is important to note that each collection area contains various collection sites, for example False Bay (collection area) contains an estimated 856 collection sites. The reference collection and registers were donated to the IZIKO South African museum in the 1960’s by UCT. Numerous amounts of literature have been published by using the data in the registers (Barnard 1951, Stock & Day 1959, Stock & Day 1962, Griffiths 1974, Blaber 1974 and Griffiths et al. 2010). Currently there are a number of taxanomic projects underway, that rely on the data contained within the registers. By making the data available in a sensible electronic format will greatly improve the time taken to complete current and future projects that rely on the registers for data. Along with the reference specimen collection it also contains a vast number of observational records, which could potentially provide a massive istorical database of species occurrences dating back to more than forty years ago. Datasets such as these could potentially give us greater insights into the effects of global change on biodiversity (Chapman 2005, Chapman 2010).]

[Identifying their diet resources is key to understanding how a high diversity of herbivore species can co-exist without competition, as well as in terms of predicting their impacts on plant species and communities. To date describing the diets of herbivores has been slow, cumbersome and probably biased. The use of DNA metabarcoding of diet samples however overcomes these limits, but is dependent on the availability of a comprehensive reference collection of DNA sequenced material for the potentially consumed plant species. To date no such reference collection exists for Subtropical Thicket in the Eastern
Cape. This project therefore aimed to establish such a reference collection, for the plant community in the Addo Elephant National Park (AENP). The data set represents the plant voucher specimens collected from two localities, their identities, and DNA sequences. The voucher specimens have been deposited in the Ria Olivier Herbarium at NMMU.]

[In 2011, South Africa’s cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) metapopulation began with the capture of free-roaming cheetahs on ranchland to populate a network of fenced game reserves. This practice has become increasingly disparaged as the wild population faces population decline due to numerous anthropogenic threats. However, occasionally, there are extenuating circumstances where free-roaming animals are captured from this population to augment the managed metapopulation. One particular female cheetah that was captured on ranchland in the North West Province in April 2014, where she was perceived to be at risk from persecution, was released onto Pilanesberg National Park She was monitored via satellite telemetry for a period of 10 months, and interventions took place during this period to ensure her survival. Satellite location data of ~11 months, including four locations per day, is availed for users interested in movement, home-range and resource use data]

[In 2014, an analysis of sandstone vs basalt biodiversity richness was undertaken in the central Stormberg by Ms Elizabeth Gaisford as an Honours project at Rhodes University (Gaisford 2014). This resulted in the following collections:
• Gaisford EL – c.500 records (various part of the central Stormberg, January/February 2014).
• Clark VR & Gaisford EL – 350 collections (central Stormberg, March 2014).

An additional collecting trip in December 2014 yielded the following:
• Clark VR et al. – 331 collections (Bamboesberge & Andriesberg, December 2014).

The 2014 material has all been identified, labelled and databased in BRAHMS, and will also form part of the FBIP project. As for the other collections, duplicate material of certain genera/families has been sent to various taxonomists around the world. The GRA material is in the process of being mounted for filing.]

Along with the reference specimen collection it also contains a vast number of observational records, which could potentially provide a massive historical database of species occurrences dating back to more than forty years ago. Datasets such as these could potentially give us greater insights into the effects of global change on biodiversity (Chapman 2005, Chapman 2010).]
